PRUNUS cerasifera nigra
A small, ornamental flowering plum with very dark purple summer foliage carried on dark branches. Single pink flowers in spring make a spectacular display. Often used as a striking small foliage contrast tree for smaller gardens or as a street tree.
Grows to 5m tall and 4m wide after approximatley 10 years. Can be pruned and shaped to maintain a smaller size if desired.
Although it is deciduous, the leaves are extremely thin and dark in colour meaning that they blend into your mulch and decompose rapidly, which in turn means that it is unlikely for you to need to collect them!!
WESTRINGIA Jervis Gem
Australian native shrub with purple/lilac flowers featuring foliage with a green top and a silvery underside.
Grows to 1.2m x 1.5m making a fantastic ‘filler’ type shrub with low water and fertilizer requirements.
AGAPANTHUS Tinkerbell
A dwarf form of Agapanthus that produce’s very soft blue flowers.
Growing to 20cmx20cm in total it provides wonderful edging or small/narrow garden fillers.
Also available in a Deep Emerald Green variety.
Non-Dwarf varities can grow to 1.5mx1.5m.
DIETES Grandiflora
Otherwise known as Iris (and many subsiduaries like spanish, butterfly etc.) the Grandiflora produces wonderful white, purple and yellow flowers nestled into lush deep emerald green foliage making it the perfect addition to any garden.
The Grandiflora is our favourite and grows to 1.5mx1m.
The other vairieties can be smaller and lighter green.
TRACHELOSPERMUM Tricolour
Chinese varigated Star Jasmine, produces small very fragrant white flowers in spring.
Excellent as either a climber or ground cover. Provides excellent foliage contrast in it’s verigated (green and cream) form. Also available in a deep/mid green – Star Jasmine.
Grow size is dependant on whether you use it as a climber or a ground cover.
PHORMIUM Wildwood
New Zealand flax. A grassy/strappy plant that generally grows to 1mx1m, available in a manner of shdes from green to cream to purple and everywhere in between.
Fantastic foliage colours, is at home in almost any garden but is best suited to modern planting.
Most grow to around 1mx1m.
DIANELLA Little Jess
Dianella is also a grassy style plant, but this species flowers! The amount and colour of the flowers depends on the specific breed.
The foliage can range from broadleafed cream and green to miniature versions of emerald green and even some newer red varieties.
More hardy than most ‘flaxes’ and a great alternative, especially the dwarf varieties for those smaller areas!!
Some grow as large as 1.5mx1m and as small as 25cmx25cm.
ACMENA Smithii
Lily Pilly (not native).
Can grow upto 2m per year!! Fast growing deep green, available in some mixed shades with red/orange and bronze.
Makes for a perfect screening plant with some varieties bing specifically grown and targeted to hedging for fences and screens.
Grows to between 2mx2m and as small as 75cmx75cm dependant on variety.
SYZYGIUM Bush Christmas
Syzygium, more commonly known as Bush Christmas or Native Lily Pilly.
With both full sized and dwarf varieties it makes for fantastic hedges from as low as 75cm to 2m and everywhere in between!! Colours range from green to green with red/orange!! Also popular in topiary’s (shapes like dolphins etc.) so can make a wonderful feature plant!!
More waterwise than the original Acmena but Syzygium is slower growing.
ANIGOZANTHUS
Kangaroo Paw!
Ranging from red to green and even black and a multitude of colours in between the world famous Kangaroo Paw truly is versatile, some varieties are full sized (1.5mx1m) and some are dwarf (75cmx50cm) some have been bred to produce more flowers and some are just untouched Australian beauties!!
No garden is too formal or too informal for Kangaroo Paw!! They can be mass planted, line planted or just normally planted!! Aussie Aussie Aussie!!
BUXUS Japonica
Japanese boxwood.
Two varieties, one grows to around 2m high and the other is just 60cm. Buxus make for a fantastic small hedge which fills with a spectacular finish.
Probably the most widely used small intrecate hedging plant.
Slow growing makes for lower maintenance but a higher cost when trying to achieve an instant hedge.
CALLISTEMON
Bottle-brush.
Can be in shrub or tree form, shrubs can be as small as 70cmx70cm compact shrub and range to full sized 6m trees.
Produces red Bottlebrush flowers and is of course native to Australia.
DRACAENA
Dragon Tree or Rainbow Tree.
Makes for a fantastic feature plant that grows well in full or mostly shade.
Grows upto 3.5m high, but most commonly around 2m.
Thin stemmed plant with all foliage on the head (pictured), can reshoot from the base, the shoots can be removed and planted or discarded.
LIRIOPE Evergreen Giant
Liriopes are grass like plants with long strappy leaves. Most varieties form tight clumps and produce flowers late spring through to autumn. Liriope are useful for borders and do particulary well under trees or in semi shade areas. Excellent for mass planting to ‘fill’ in between larger shrubs and trees. Evergreen Giant is an evergreen variety that grows to 60cm tall with dark green foliage and dark purple flowers
Great border and mass planting.
PYRUS
Ornamental Pear Tree.
Available in many different forms from a dwarf (5-6m) variety to narrow (pictured) for those more feature plantings.
Also available in Red.
Spectacular colours of orange-red,reddish-purple, yellow-red
A commonly planted ornamental pear, featuring glossy, rounded leaves, a prolific floral display and good autumn foliage colour.
RAPHIOLEPIS
Indian Hawthorn.
Excellent shrub available in many varieties, some with red/pink flowers. Makes for a fantastic hedge or edging. Waterwise, salt tolerant, diseaese resistant….. almost bullet-proof!!
Grows as large as 2mx2m with dwarf varieties growing as small as 1mx1m.
SAPIUM Sebiferum
Chinese Tallow. Lovely autumn colours. Flowers in spring.
A very tough and adaptable medium sized tree that will perform well in difficult sites from cool temperate to warm temperate areas. A good feature tree in parks and gardens in lawns or beds. Suitable for warmer climates.
Grows to maximum of 7m x 3m.
YUCCA Elephantipes
Hardy, water wise, evergreen, spikey shrub.
Perfect for feature plantings or even in pots.
Full sun or Part Shade, grows to 6m high.
