 Sir Walter Soft Leaf Buffalo

Sir Walter is our most popular turf, requiring less maintenance than any other lawn. It is a soft feel Buffalo lawn that is extremely shade tolerant and is the best all-rounder for general use.

Pros: Less water, less fertilizer, less mowing. Cons: Price.

Notes: This variety can be cut too short, for best performace it is recommended to be cut once every 2 weeks, leaving lots of blade to shade and keep the root system moist. Also; be very careful of “weed & feed” or “bindii killer” type products, seek advice or read the label prior to application.

Wintergreen Couch

Wintergreen couch is quite possibly Perth’s most common lawn. It is hardy and although it dies off quickly, it can regenerate just as fast. It has a deep root system but is still quite dependant on regular watering. It can be cut very short leaving a golf green type lawn.

Pros: Price. Cons: Can be invasive, dies quickly, will not grow in the shade, more maintenance.

Notes: This lawn is common for a reason! It is very easy to grow and very forgiving to those who may try and fail. It can be the superior lawn if it is kept with the utmost attention, any less and it will appear more like grass.

 Kikuyu

Kikuyu lawn is almost bullet proof!! This is what horse paddocks and most school and shire ovals are made from!! It is ideal for broad open spaces with lots of sun and will even tolerate some shade and salt!!

Pros: Price, almost completely maintenance free, low water use, fast regeneration. Cons: Invasive.

Notes: This lawn is increasing in popularity. The only real downside to Kikuyu is it’s invasive nature, but keep this in check with edging and mowing every 2 or 3 weeks and you’ll have the hardiest lawn around. Another bonus is the very low requirement for weeding, watering and fertilizing!!

Palmetto St. Augustine

Palmetto is very similar to Sir Walter, therefore making it a personal preference on the shade of green that you are after!! Palmetto is a very slightly lighter green colour, but this can be combatted (as with all lawns) with fertilizer!!!

Pros: Less water, fertilizer and mowing. Cons: Price, Sir Walter is better suited to WA.

Notes: Mercedes vs BMW would be a classic example of Sir Walter vs Palmetto, both are fantastic lawns and superior to many others in their own right. Again, mowing is not to be too short and be careful of weed and feed type products.

 Queensland Blue

Queensland Blue is another couch lawn. It is similar to WinterGreen but far superior in performace and apperance. It has a lovely Deep Green colour with a Blue tinge when it is properly maintained.

Pros: Price, colour. Cons: Can be invasive, dies quickly, will not grow in the shade, more maintenance than stolon type lawns (Buffalo, Kikuyu).

Notes: This lawn is very easy to grow and very forgiving to those who may try and fail. It can be the superior lawn if it is kept with the utmost attention, any less and it will lose it’s blur tinge and appear more yellowish.

Empire Zoysia

Zoysia is almost a cross between Queensland Blue and Kikuyu in apperance. It has been ‘lab’ bred to provide great tolerance to drought and shade along with resistance to Lawn Beetle and Weeds. The breeders claim that it has the lowest mowing and maintenance requirement of any lawn in Australia.

Pros: Modern, looks lovely, breeders claims. Cons: Price, new variety yet to prove the test of time.

Notes: This is a new variety of commercially grown turf and we are yet to see some real long term results. If the breeders claims are accurate, this will be the lawn of the future.
